In order to qualify for Medicare and Medicaid EHR incentive payments, providers must use EHR technology/products that have been certified by an Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology-Authorized Testing and Certification Body (ONC-ATCB, or ATCB).

Certification of an EHR product by an ATCB is intended to assure health care providers that the EHR technology they adopt includes the capabilities they will need to participate in the Medicare and Medicaid EHR incentive programs.

The Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) has identified two organizations as Authorized Testing and Certification Bodies:

  • Certification Commission for Health Information Technology (CCHIT)
  • Drummond Group, Inc.

These organizations can now begin certifying EHR products.
